Even Now

I viewed you from above while you frolicked as a child, blissfully ignorant of the monster you would become.

Even then, I loved you.

I looked on with dismay as you killed a frog, then bragged about your mercilessness to your friends.

Even then, I loved you.

I saw every second of the time you first killed another, and I knew the same fear and repugnance that filled your very soul as you took a man’s life.

Even then, I loved you.

I cried as your name became a synonym for tyranny, terror, and death, and as you slaughtered thousands of my innocent children: Jews, Christians, and atheists alike.

Even then, though it was hard, I loved you.

I gazed on as you started your quest to own the world, becoming a virtually unstoppable pawn of the Devil, as you condemned thousands of Jews to spend the short remainder of their lives in concentration camps.

Even then, I loved you.

I saw, agony flooding my soul, as you finally met your downfall, and I knew that your death was coming soon, far before its time.

Even then, I loved you.

I barely managed not to turn away as you put a bullet through your head, influencing your wife to do the same, and thus left the world you had destroyed.

Even then, I loved you.

And now, I watch as children are taught to fear your name, as you are displayed in history books as the worst misfortune to ever befall the world. And I think about who you could have been, who I made you to be, and my sadness is unparalleled by any other.
